Total Optara project at Total

The Total Optara project includes the construction of a new solvent asphalt extraction unit and a new mild hydrocracking unit in the Port of Antwerp. A large group of tec engineers is involved in the implementation of this project.

The Total Optara project is an extension/adjustment of an existing oil refinery. The refinery’s total licensed capacity is 20.5 million tonnes of crude oil per year.
The current installation uses thermal cracking to convert vacuum residue (VACRES) in the visbreaker unit (J 71) to lighter products (gas oil, cracked petrol and gas) and a less viscous residue. The new/adjusted installations provided by the OPTARA project convert the vacuum residue into high-quality oil components. These components are then processed further in the existing installations.tec has provided Total with highly qualified engineers with specific expertise in the oil and gas industry for many years and also contributes tec expertise to the Optara project.
